Except for water and milk - wine is one of the oldest drinks in the world. While no one knows for certain when wine was first made from grapes, the earliest indication is from grape decorated pieces of clay pitchers dating from about 6000 B.C. It may have been chance that led people to discover wine, but we do know that sometime after 1600 B.C. the Greek civilization was cultivating grapes throughout the Mediterranean. Wine was used in rituals, celebrations, and festivals. During the Roman Empire wine was a status symbol, used as medicine, in exchange for goods or services and in ritual offerings. In the Middle Ages, monks were the primary wine producers. The Benedictines had extremely developed wine skills, and by the sixteenth century the total area planted in grapes in Europe was approximately four times what it is today.
