Gabriel's Angels Mission

To develop healthy relationships between abused and at-risk children and pets.

Following are some excerpts from the Gabriel Chronicle summer 2003

Letter from the Director
To our devoted volunteers and donors, we have just closed our fiscal year end and I want to thank each of you for your continued commitment to our mission. We strive to end the cycle of violence that is a haunting predator of children who are victims of abuse and neglect. As you know we utilize Pet Therapy Intervention in the lives of thse children to accomplish this mission. We are humbled by your continued assistance. Thank-you!

Crisis Nursery
The mission statement of The Crisis Nursery is to prevent child abuse and neglect by providing shelter and support services to children from birth to age ten. Although this is a Herculean task in today's society, they have succeeded in providing safety, protection and nurturance to over 11,000 children since their incorporation in 1977. Looking at some of the statistics in Arizona, it is no wonder families are under extreme stress sometimes leading to abuse and neglect of children. The Crisis Nursery provides a unique attitude of non-judgement towards these parents by encouraging them to bring their children to this safe environment when stress and pressure have already or are about to lead to abuse or neglect. Most of the children arrive at the nursery following a parental call. The rest are referredy by Child Protective Services.

Within the nurturing walls of The Crisis Nursery there are two basic programs. The first is the Residential Shelter where temporary shelter is given to as many as 36 children at a time. The Residential Nursery provides consistent daily routines, medical assessments and care, speech and language programs, indoor and outdoor recreation as well as crisis intervention counseling and community referrals for parents and relatives. Children range from newborn to ten years at the shelter. The turn over can be rapid although children have stayed as long as 11 months.

The second is the FACES program housed at the Virginia G. Piper Center. FACES stands for "Families And Children Experiencing Success". This program is for children from 3 months to 5 years who live at home but have been identified as at-risk of abuse and neglect. Qualified children from the community engage in daily schedules, which promote a mixture of activities, stimulation and play which meet the guidelines of the Federal Headstart Program. Daily nutritional needs are met as well as developmental screenings. Most importantly, Family Support Specialists make home visits where they role model positive behavior for the parents empowering them in their goal to become nurturing caregivers to their children. Becuase children may participate in this program for years in the daytime, there is a consistency that enhances the family's chance of success. The Crisis Nursery was the agency that Pam Gaber, the founder of Gabriel's Angels, volunteered for prior to our inception, so there is a very special connection between the two. Our mission statements are very similar, although we employ different methods to attain our goals. At FACES, "Overall dog therapy through Gabriel's Angels has expanded our program and allowed the children to experience the unconditional love and trust that only man's best friend can give. Without Gabriel's Angels, the children would have one less friend in the world who will always love them wether they are angry, sad or lonely. They can always count on the dogs to keep licking their faces and taking treats from thier hands."

Companies Helping Kids
Caring companies now have an opportunity to sponsor a Gabriel's Angels Therapy Team! You will be helping us to meet a need for wounded children who are crying for help. They have no voice, they are silenced by and buried in their pain. Funding received from this program will enable us to focus on our primary goal of helping children in crisis. As a proud Therapy Team sponsor, your company will benefit in knowing these abused and at-risk children are being healed. Your company name is proudly displayed on the dog's therapy vest. In addition, we will send 50 Human Education Dog Trading Cards and a Sponsorship Plaque as a thank-you for supporting Gabriel's Angels.

Angels Helping Kids
Help us brighten the lives of abused and at-risk children. For just $10 a child, pet therapy can be provided for an entire year! Imagine the smiles you'll put on the children's faces each time the therapy dog comes to visit! These children who have been robbed of their childhood by those they once trusted are now finding trust once again through the unconditional love of our animals.
