Press Release for Photography Classes

Local Photographer Wraps Up Creative Photography Course at SMCC's Ahwatukee Campus with Trip to Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West.

Dale Kesel, photographer and resident of the Ahwatukee area since 1991 has been passing along the tools and techniques he has learned and developed as a professional photographer to students by teaching Photography Courses at South Mountain Community College and Ottawa University. SMCC holds its classes at the Horizon School at the corner of 48th Street and Liberty Lane.

Kesel was looking for a place to take his Creative Photography students at the end of the course to give thema chance to practice all that they had learned. When he asked for suggestions from the students, Taliesin West was the choice. It turned out to be a great choice, with beautiful grounds and an abundance of interesting and stimulating subjects. The obvious was the Architecture. But, in addition, "we came across a sculpture garden with gorgeous pieces, each on a turntable so that we could rotate them to get the light just right," said Kesel.

The student who suggested Taliesin West, arranged a special tour that would be short on lecture and long on time to take photographs. This was essential to making the tour a great photographic learning experience. Kesel and students alkike had to sign releases agreeing not to publish the images without permission from Taliesin West. And, "Yes, I did obtain that permission," remarked Kesel.

Kesel and his students reviewed the images that students captured at the Wright property in their final class. "It was wondreful to see how much students had gained during the course--it really showed int he images that they captured at Taliesin WEst," said Kesel.

Basic Photography and Creative Photography courses will begin again at SMCC, Ahwatukee under the direction of Dale Kesel in the Fall.
