Ahwatukee Announcements
Flight: Chagall, Miró, and the Plight of Refugees
Gebert Contemporary to Exhibit Rare Collection of 20th Century Artists and their Interpretation of the Refugee Experience
Proceeds to Benefit the International Rescue Committee Phoenix
The International Rescue Committee Phoenix is pleased to announce a partnership with Gebert Contemporary, in Scottsdale, to showcase a rare
collection of 20th Century Artists July 1st - 15th: Flight: Chagall, Miró, and the Plight of Refugees. This is a very special portfolio of 12
individual works by 20th Century masters representing their interpretation of the struggle of those who flee from their homes in search of freedom.
The collection consists of 11 lithographs and 1 serigraph. The exhibit includes the works of 12 master artists: Eugene Berman, Alexander Calder,
Marc Chagall, Viera da Silva, Adolph Gottlieb, Wifredo Lam, Jacques Lipchitz, André Masson, Joan Miró, Robert Motherwell (serigraph), Edouard Pignon,
and Fritz Wotruba.
The Flight series was originally organized by American WWII hero Varian Fry, an International Rescue Committee representative in France during WWII
, who rescued over 1,500 writers, artists, intellectuals, and over 2,000 other refugees. Among those Fry helped rescue were Hannah Arendt,
Andre Breton, Marc Chagall, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Wand Landowska, Jacques Lipchitz, and Heinrich Mann. In the 1960’s, to raise funds for
the IRC’s incredible work, Fry began assembling a portfolio by 12 established artists whose work would be based on the theme of flight, to reflect
the plight of the refugees. All plates were destroyed by the artists after the printing.
The International Rescue Committee was established in 1933 at the behest of Albert Einstein to aid European refugees escaping the Nazis. Now
celebrating its 75th Anniversary year, the organization is a global leader in relief, rehabilitation, protection, post-conflict development, and
resettlement services for refugees and others uprooted or affected by persecution and violent conflict. Domestically, the IRC resettles refugees
throughout the United States. Since 1994, the IRC Phoenix helped over 8,700 of the world’s refugees resettle, adjust, and rebuild their lives in
Arizona.
The Flight series will be exhibited from July 1st - July 15th at the Gebert Contemporary on Main Street and will serve as a focal point of the
Summer Spectacular Artwalk on July 10th. A limited number of the original 300 sets remain and are offered for sale to benefit the International
Rescue Committee. Proceeds from the sales of this impressive and historical portfolio will support the work of the International Rescue
Committee’s Phoenix office, assisting thousands of refugees from Myanmar, Burundi, Somalia, Iraq, and Cuba who are legally admitted through the
U.S. Admissions program.
